Mozilla Lightning Rocks

August 15th, 2010

For years I used “Outlook Express” because Outlook was a pain in the “A..” Over complicated and intrusive but with the advent of XP Pro even Express became a pain with its always wanting to compress files and at the volume of email that passes through my system that is several times a day. Oi! So I ditched Express and shifted to Thunderbird. I already had a small desktop calendar that I was using that worked fine alerting me to coming events ect… but It was till a bit short of everything I needed and then I discovered Mozilla Lightning! Huzzah! If you are using Thunderbird all you have to do is go to tools and add ons and install Lightning and it seamlessly nestles itself in with Thunderbird and yer off to the races. Give it a shot if you already use T-Bird and see what ya think!

Swapping MB without reloading O/S

July 30th, 2010

One of my motherboards needed upgrading but I had never done it with anything newer than Win2KPro and this machine had XP Pro Sp3, the full version not an older one updated to Sp3. I googled and checked on Cnet and got lots of advice all of it contradictory naturally and decided to punt.

First I cloned the HDD and then deleted all of the drivers except the chipset as I was reusing the processor on the new board and left the video drivers as well since the new board had onboard video. I re installed the drive without any drivers and booted the machine. It came up normally except for the fact that everything was in “Huge Video Mode” and recognized that there was new hardware and asked for the drivers. Everything went well except for the fact that XP freaked out and wanted to be re registered. It took about half an hour all told with the re boots that had to be done and I was back in business and then curiosity got the best of me. What the hell!

I Put the HDD that still had drivers in the O/S back in the machine and launched it again to see what would happen. As it turns out I could have saved myself a lot of trouble as XP did a repeat performance and booted, saw the new  hardware and again asked for the drivers. I don’t know how an older version of XP would react but SP3 did it either way and I have been told that Win7 will do it as well so there is an FYI for you.

Renfaire photos and 404 Error codes

July 25th, 2010

I just spent most of this weekend doing SEO on pygmypony.net. This may not sound relevant to the people who just come to look at renfaire photos but it is. Pygmypony.net is gigantic by website standards if for no other reason than it is over 2Gb in size on the HDD. 2Gb is humongus! When a site is that big sometimes links get broken in my case there were 950 broken links. In every case the index page and the .jpegs were in place giving the appearance of a functioning photo album but when you clicked on a photo you got a 404 error code. The 404 error code on my website asks you to notify the webmaster and provides a email address. All I ask is please if you get a 404 error code let me know. I am probably the most proactive webmaster in the world! I am here every day checking my email, it may not be until that evening but it is done and all email is answered (legit email that is)

Web Browsers, IE7, IE8 and Firefox

July 24th, 2010

The web browser war is over and Microsoft lost. The last “Almost” decent browser that MS made was IE6 and it had its issues but at least it was pretty stable and almost everything displayed like it should most of the time and then came IE7. Even though this is my blog and I can say pretty much what I want I would be embarrassed by the thoughts that run through my mind at the thought of IE7. I did a search on the updates done in IE7′s history and nearly all of them were to correct CSS issues and still they never made it work right with HTML 4.o Strict but thankfully Firefox came along and negated all of that. IE8 will display CSS properly as will Safari and even the now defunct Netscape.

The point of this rant is that I sent out a test of a new website design to over 500 people on my private mailing list and of the 269 responses I got back the breakdown was as follows.

Love It: 201

Pretty good but some suggestions:25 Most Good Ones Too!

Okay:16

Not Enough Flash etc…: 12 (On Purpose)

Nope!:7 (Cant make everyone happy)

Link Wont Work:5 (Fixed that)

Wont Display Right:3*

* I contacted all three of these and found that they all were using IE7. I told them to upgrade to IE 8 or install Firefox and that solved the problem and everything worked as planned. Approximately 11% of computer users in the world still have IE7 on their machines unfortunately and just as unfortunately a large percentage of those are using company computers that are locked down by the IT department. If you are one of those unfortunates take your computer and slap your IT guy upside the head with it and tell him to update it! NO EXCUSES! But don’t complain because a site wont display right when the fix has been around since Aug 27 2008. You don’t have it yet?

An even better option though is Mozilla Foundations Firefox. It rocks! Stable, secure, faster than IE, and you can do anything just about with Firefox!

Nuff Said! Update or Get Left behind.

Combining Blogs

July 19th, 2010

Two blogs is one to many so I am combining my renfaire and IT blog into one and using the IT blog as my base. Most of you who really do know me are aware that I not only do faire but build computer and websites as well so this will work better for me.

In addition I would like to inform you that I am no longer webmaster for Sherwood Forest Faire. I don’t know who will be doing the website now but please no more Sherwood questions as I no longer have a clue. The up side is that I now have time to catch up on my own neglected website (Pygmypony.net) and finish all of the photos languishing in my inbox and I can go back to being a rennie again without having to worry about all the other stuff.
